I ran the HIS Hair Clinic in Houston for the best part of 3 years, and many clients came from Austin for Scalp Micropigmentation, San Antonio, Louisiana and much further afield to solve their hair loss. With traveling such distances, it is simple to see why having the hair tattoo treatment done in one session is desirable. One visit. Done!

If I had written this post three years ago, it would be named: “Why you should never do Scalp Micropigmentation in one session!” But things have changed. One session can work. Absolutely. I see some good results out there after one session. But if I honestly believed that it was possible to achieve a result to the same excellent results in just one session – myself and many others would be doing it already.

Multiple sessions are the most popular amongst the best clinics. Here is why…

With 2-3 sessions, we can start light and not too dense and gradually increase these sessions by session. This is sensible and guarantees that a treatment cannot be too dark/too dense. However, experience means we can do more in one session without taking risks. By using multiple sessions session by session, we can also create a textured and more “3D” look than would be possible after one session.

My theory is that with something like this, a hair loss solution: if there is a conflict of Time Vs. Quality, then we should pick Quality… always.

This is exactly how I do my treatments and exactly what I teach in my SMP training course: www.scalpp.com/scalp-micropigmentation-training Why? By treating both the practitioner and client with the gift of additional sessions, we can then progress confidently into future treatment with the ultimate assistant – the client’s skin! Without taking any risks whatsoever – it is the client’s response to the previous session’s work that will inform me exactly how to proceed for the best possible outcome. By creating a slow gradual build up of both density and color – I am able to add those tiny acute details that make all the difference. This is especially prevalent for a softer hairline as we need to go as light as possible (without being invisible) on the very front to create the natural faded-out look that you see here:

After sessions, we can then give yourself and your practitioner a break from the treatment and see it with a fresh set of eyes once settled and without any redness (which can often be blinding and make the treatment hard to see).

Then, the client would have lived with the treatment for a week, 2 weeks, a month (to be decided at consultation), before session two and possibly three. Any adjustments we would like to make to the hairline or side profiles or adding extra darkness etc, can then be achieved during this session.

It is no coincidence then that almost all of the best Technicians in the world do this is multiple sessions. If the results would compare to our approach right now then I can assure you – we would all be doing this in one session. Afterall one sessions and done would be much more convenient for everybody – and no long drives from San Antonio, Dallas and Austin!

So in conclusion – yes it can work and a good treatment can be awarded in one session. But “good” isn’t good enough (not for me anyway). We are seeking perfection and as far as I am concerned – this is better suited to 2 – 3 sessions for completion.
